(Italy) - Marking the 40th Anniversary of its Broadway debut, HAIR: The Musical is touring across Italy, playing in some of the country's most prestigious theatres.

This contemporary production of the quintessential ‘60s-themed play is not a simple rendition of the musical however: the real intention is to update the values on which the musical is based. Although 40 years have passed since its debut, the “American Tribal Love Rock Musical” maintains its original freshness and energy.

Lighting director and designer is Marcello Jazzetti with video/projection direction by Cristina Redini. Rental company IMMAGINI, E… of Soresina has supplied the video and lighting gear for the tour.

LC Series™ LED panels
Twelve mid-stage positioned Martin LC Series™ LED panels are used as lateral screens for text, image and graphics projection. LD Marcello Jazzetti, who specified the LC panels because of their familiarity, finds the LC Series “exceptional and technologically advanced.”

His initial thoughts were to use the LC Series for primary stage lighting but eventually decided to incorporate image and graphics projection as well. Marcello reports that he is very satisfied with the panels’ quality and level of performance and praises their extreme light weight, easy set-up and versatility. The panels are in fact very easy to install, even in environments where space is limited, like theatres. Assembly is by a familiar truss mount format, and connecting the units together is simple.

Playing an important role
Because the musical’s powerful songs are presented in their original language (English), Cristina Redini, who handles video and graphics projection, sought a way to give visibility and provide comprehension to some of the main concepts of the show. She decided to let the panels become an active part of the musical by projecting key text onto the screens together with original images from the ‘60s, modern film segments, and complex graphical effects.

She also explains how the panels’ unique semi-transparency allows the musicians - who play live during the show and are located upstage behind the LC Series - to be visible to the audience.

Nothing but love
Marco Simonetta, video output technician who travels with the tour, calls the LC Series easy to use and absolutely reliable. Moreover, he explains that they are never used at 100% output on the show. They are simply too bright.

Lorenzo Taverna, managing director of IMMAGINI, E… who supplied the LC Series, says that perhaps the most appreciated characteristics of the LC Series is their reliability and versatility.

“HAIR – The Musical” opened on February 19th at Teatro Colosseo in Turin with more than 30 talented artists from around the world taking part. The show portrays the end of the ‘60s, global protests against an unpopular war in full swing, and love, freedom and self expression blossoming. Direction is by Giampiero Solari, choreography by David Parsons and musical direction by well known Italian singer, Elisa.
