DJ Factory complete QSC install at Barcelona's Cova

19 July 2008

DJ Factory recently completed a nightclub installation using exclusively QSC Audio AcousticDesign sound reinforcement.

For La Cova’s owners, David Pecharroman and Coral Martínez, the move is the latest chapter in a long relationship with QSC Spain, and specifically their sales manager for Catalonia and the Balearics, Ezequiel Mayoral.

The two proprietors had been operating LaCova in a different location for 12 years — and five months ago they decided to open a second venue — a Comedy Club right on the beach.

While setting up that venue the search began for a sound system that was not only reliable but provide excellent speech intelligibility over extreme distances along the littoral — a tall order for any system.

They evaluated different portable rigs until Ezequiel turned up with a fully-matched and integrated QSC HPR-122i system, containing 12in LF woofer and 3in voice coil driven by 400 watts of class H power. The owners were astonished to discover that with just six portable loudspeakers they could provide coverage for up to 4,000.

And so when the lease ran out on their sister club and they were forced to move this Spring to a nearby former industrial unit, they had no hesitation in repeating the successful QSC formula.

Inside the all-white interior, with its long rectilinear shape, Tony Espin masterminded the installation for DJ Factory to ensure not only even distribution, but via a series of system presets optimised the sound depending on whether the venue would be presenting live music, comedic speech or hard dance playback from the highly-specified DJ station.

“The whole idea was to provide LaCova with maximum versatility for minimum investment,” explained Mayoral.

Thus the venue has been equipped with six flown AcousticDesign AD-S282H dual 8in enclosures and six ground-stacked HPR-151’s as its main surround system, with two HPR-122’s on chains angled over the small performance podium to provide conventional PA. At the rear of the room are a pair of AD-S82H’s, which incorporate QSC's revolutionary IntelliDock™ intelligent mounting system, providing rear infill on delays. The passive speakers are powered by QSC RMX-1450 amplifiers.

Different speaker settings and gain structures are programmed into QSC’s DSP 322ua operating on the company’s proprietary QSControl.net platform, and these are accessed according to mode. Controlled over an Ethernet network using QSC's Venue Manager software, the 8-in/8-out DSP 322ua is fully configurable with all data stored in the device memory.

“The AD-S282H strikes the right balance between size and stylish looks, and blends in perfectly with the white décor,” continues QSC Spain’s sales manager. This place gets really crowded and when you are doing comedy you need high SPL and a lot of vocal intelligibility.

“The AD-S282H not only has a slim, sleek design but provides output comparable to speakers with 12in drivers and compression horns.”

The QSC loudspeakers form part of an imaginative design that includes a front circular stage lighting truss, with moving lights and PAR LEDs,  and a rear square truss over the dancefloor with more PAR LED’s, conventional lighting and strobes.

Certainly LaCova’s clientele have warmed to the new location, and are voting with their feet; now the place is packed with up to 800 patrons dancing until 3am, seven nights a week.
