IN PROFILE: WHITE CLUBBING

September / October 2008

The Perfect Canvas

There’s something sexy about clubs with all-white interiors. Perhaps they clue in to childhood images of luxurious space-age chic, or maybe it’s the John Lennon minimal-mansion look that springs to mind. Whatever it is, when done properly they are among the classiest looking clubs in town.

We’ve featured many of these venues in the past - Sketch in London, Reina Bruja in Madrid, and Supperclub in Amsterdam, San Francisco and Rome (the inspiration for one of the clubs in this issue: Vanilla) - all of them have that beautiful through-the-looking-glass feel that keeps guest coming back for more.

Of course, the whiter the interior, the harder it is to keep it looking smart – especially when you allow those pesky punters in to spill their cocktails and scuff the walls. Anything you can do to preserve that unblemished look is, therefore, all to the good. One way to do this is to substitute those big black speakers – normally hidden in the dark of regular clubs – for slick, white, ergonomic alternatives, now available from many of the major manufacturers.

These clubs also provide the perfect blank canvas on which lighting designers (and perhaps even VJs) can weave their magic. The use of LED lighting in particular means an entire club can switch to whatever hue is required or desired. Read on and be inspired...
