NRG 1201 installed aboard an UFO

An UFO hovers over the rails of the Flandre station, in Lille, France. The spaceship intermittently sends a central shaft of light down to the ground, where it appears to select a passer-by to beam up into the craft.

Actually, it is not an alien artifact, but an art installation designed by British designer Ross Lovegrove, and commissioned by arts organisation Lille 3000 for Fantastic 2012, a festival of futuristic concepts in design and the arts.

The UFO, 8m wide, is invisibly suspended a few meters over the rails and features a perfect mirror finishing and a seamless panels connection; an LED array along the edge suggests a rotation movement.

A centrally located customised NRG 1201 by D.T.S. projects downward a bright beam of light.

After a first moment of shock for what is perceived either as a close encounter of the third kind or a relic from the Area 51 days, people rightly acknowledge the work as the city’s intriguing welcome to the great Lille 3000 cultural event.

The lighting installation aboard the UFO was made by ESL France.
