Rum Jungle

May / June 2008

Rum Jungle is located smack in the middle of KL's long established Pinang Street clubbing strip.

Originally established on the opposite side of the road, the club relocated in 2007 and in doing so more than doubled the original floor plan to over 10,000 sq ft. It also allowed the creation of a lush jungle garden around its perimeter.

Operated by KL club king Ronnie Choong’s Trend Matrix Enterprises (TME), this is just one of their many major KL venues.

At KL’s Rum Jungle, the roof is covered in tree bark shingles to create an authentic look for the building and its mid level is penetrated by a series of glass panels allowing natural light to penetrate deep down inside the venue.

The outside area features flowing water and flaming torches, giant river boulders and bamboo, with logged timber pathways and gravel walkways to guide customers through the garden and into the club.

Despite its unique tropically-rustic decor, the venue is fairly typical of large KL nightclubs. In addition to a DJ booth (which has a 360º view of the whole room) there is a stage for live bands.

Technologically, the most significant thing about Rum Jungle is that this represents CODA’s first foray into Asia with a LA5A line array system installed above the stage. How did this come about? According to Trend Matrix Enterprises spokesperson, for audio technology they chose to go with their long-standing audio partner - Electrosystem Singapore’s James Yeung, who highly recommended CODA.

They installed the second highest active line array system comprising the six units of LA5A speakers, two units of LA5A Sub and two units of PW418 passive double 18 ground subs for the Front Of House system.

Besides that, Camco Amplifiers and Klark Teknik DSPs are used to control the CODA side-fill and surround systems. James Yeung’s KL based partner, Michael Tan of Dynamix Sound & Light Production, told mondo*dr that they first experienced CODA sound at PALM Beijing in 2007 and the rest is history.

Based on the resounding success of CODA’s first Asian club install at Rum Jungle, at least four other venues in KL have opted for CODA, now one of the most rapidly expanding pro audio systems in Malaysia.
